LESSON: If I Had $1,000,000

This single-period lesson is geared towards Secondary 2 students at an intermediate level. Students will practice using the structure "If I had $1,000,000, I would ____________." This is useful to the students, as I've noted they continue to use "If _______, then I would..." statements instead of using an incorrect grammatical form.

In this lesson, students engage in oral communication, and there is a graded C2 and C3 task. The students listen to "If I Had A $1,000,000" by the Barenaked Ladies (set to a video with pictures that correspond to the lyrics), and do a gap-fill exercise with the lyrics as they listen. Then, students complete a Think-Pair-Share activity in which they discuss what they would do with a large sum of money.

The students then watch a video about P.K. Subban and his donation of $10,000,000 to the Montreal Children's Hospital (with subtitles). We will have a brief class discussion about it. Finally, the students will write a paragraph-long response about what they would spend their money on, and if they changed their minds upon seeing the last video.

Upon teaching this lesson, many of the students did choose more altruistic things to spend their money on (or at the very least, chose to allot a bit more of their money to charitable causes.) Overall, the students seemed to enjoy it!
