Consults resource people and parents to obtain background information on students with difficulties (needs, progress, etc.).
-
Proposes learning tasks, challenges and roles within the class that help students to progress.
-
Participates in developing and implementing individualized education plans.
LEVEL OF MASTERY
By the end of his or her initial training, the student teacher should be able to:
-
Cooperate in the development and implementation of individualized education plans designed for students under his or her responsibility.
I adjusted my grading on tests that involved translation or writing for students with dyslexia (occasionally omitting the spelling criteria entirely) and supported their use of learning tools.
I had a student who did not seem engaged in the course and was unwilling to participate. Upon speaking to his mother at Parent-Teacher night, I found that he had behavioral difficulties that I had not known about prior, and was able to adjust my approach in a more accurate manner to accommodate him.
I was able to print out large copies of worksheets for a student with vision problems.
I made allowances for more active students/students with hyperactivity by allowing some students to walk around when they finished working (provided they were not disturbing anyone), or by allowing them to play with small fidget toys. I found that this worked far better than simply stopping the students from moving: otherwise, they would often talk or engage in acts that would disturb the students around them.
I believe I have achieved thorough mastery of this competency.
