PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCY 12

Field Experience 1
Anchor 1

In my first field experience, I was able to meet a variety of students who all showed different behaviours, came from different cultures, and reacted in different ways. My main goal in working with students was to dignify each student with an equitable response. I worked towards the same expectations with every student; however, I did so with the understanding that they would likely move at their own pace.

Since my first field experience, I have taken a class in Multicultural Education, and was able to grasp the concept of equity while learning of specific ways to assist certain demographics of students. Here is an a paper I wrote about young African-American women in STEM fields, and the specific barriers that they face.

Moreover, in my Instruction for Inclusive Schools class as well as Diverse Learners, I learned of ways to ensure I treat disabled, behaviorally challenged, and otherwise at-risk students

with dignity and respect in the classroom, while maintaining a curriculum that works for the individual. I wrote a paper on the possible effects of socioeconomic status on a student's performance that can be read here.

Field Experience 2
Anchor 2

In this field experience, I maintained an ethical classroom through upholding the rules that facilitate a safe and effective learning environment for all students. Using the disciplinary guidelines of the school, I was able to correct inappropriate behaviours and encourage positive ones.

I did my best to be a kind, fair presence in the classroom that allowed all of the students to share openly! I also wanted to ensure that my actions were a positive influence on students, and I ensured my own behaviour aligned with the students' "Mode de Vie" (outlined in their agenda.)
